Scottish tartans in our collection

Tartan is a patterned cloth design made from intersecting horizontal and vertical bands of colour. The repeated pattern is known as a sett, and many tartans are associated with Scottish clans, families, districts, regiments, organisations or wider Scottish identity.

Our collection

The Tartan Bureau collection is planned around 22 tartans: 16 clan tartans and 6 universal tartans. The clan tartans are being selected for strong surname interest, recognisable heritage links and suitability for crisp printed reproduction across homeware, accessories and gifts.

The universal tartans are included for customers who want a Scottish tartan with broad appeal rather than a specific clan connection. They are especially useful for gifts, travel keepsakes and customers who love Scottish design but do not have a known clan link.

Well-known tartans

Black Watch

Black Watch is widely known as the regimental tartan of the Black Watch, the historic Scottish regiment. Its dark green, navy and black sett has also become popular beyond military use because of its restrained, versatile look.

Royal Stewart

Royal Stewart is the personal tartan of the Royal House of Stewart and one of the most recognisable tartans in the world. Its red ground and strong overchecks make it a familiar choice for festive and traditional Scottish settings.

Hunting Stewart

Hunting Stewart is associated with the Stewart name and uses a more subdued palette than Royal Stewart. Hunting tartans often use greens, blues or darker shades, making them popular where a quieter clan tartan is preferred.

Caledonia

Caledonia is a universal tartan, with a name taken from the Latin word historically used for Scotland. It is often chosen by people who want a general Scottish tartan rather than one tied to a single surname.

Flower of Scotland

Flower of Scotland is a modern universal tartan named after the well-known Scottish song. It is a good example of a tartan chosen for a broad national association rather than a clan link.

Printed, not woven

Our products use high-definition digital print on smooth fabric. They are not woven wool tartans. Printing lets us reproduce the sett sharply, keep colour consistent across product types, and create practical goods such as tea towels, scarves and blankets without asking every customer to buy traditional woven cloth.

We respect woven tartan and the craft behind it. Our role is different: we make printed tartan goods that are clear, useful and suitable for everyday gifting and use.
