How the finder will work
The planned Find Your Clan tool will let you enter a surname and see relevant clan information in one clear place. Where records support it, the result may include the clan name, motto, historic region and associated tartans.
The aim is to make tartan selection easier for customers buying for family, heritage, weddings or gifts, especially for people outside Scotland who may know a surname but not the wider clan connection.
What is a sept
A sept is a family or surname historically associated with a larger clan. Some sept names are linked through kinship, territory, allegiance, spelling changes, local history or long-standing tradition.
Sept lists can vary between sources, so the finder is being built with care. We want it to be useful without pretending that every surname connection is simple or absolute.
